Introduction
The Sugar Terminal, part of the South African Sugar Association’s Sugar Marketing and Logistics Division has a position for a Boilermaker in the Mechanical Section of the Engineering department. The Sugar Terminal is an ISO 9001:2015 and SANAS 17025 accredited bulk raw sugar handling and exporting facility that serves ten mills in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region. The facility can store in excess of 500 000 tons of sugar and includes a molasses mixing plant, weighing equipment, truck and rail discharging facilities, ship loading apparatus and approximately 3.5 kilometres of conveyer belts.
Job description

Reporting to the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman, the incumbent will be responsible for the following: read, interpret and apply specifications from engineering drawings and sketches for complex and routine boiler making maintenance, repair and installation works; material selection and determination of weld types; sign, measuring, marking and preparation of parts for complex fabrication/ assembly;
fabrication of complete assemblies of complex metal structures and fixtures involving various designs using Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or CO² or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW); be able to weld in different positions (1g up to 6g) and quality assure applications and outcomes i.e. pressure and tolerance tests; information update i.e. job cards, material requisitions; supervision; knowledge of safety procedures.

As the sugar receipting operation is conducted around the clock during the course of the season the incumbent will also be required to perform standby duties on a rotational basis approximately once in every three weeks to attend to mechanical breakdowns that occur outside of regular work hours. Ship loading is another feature of this position involving ad hoc shiftwork. Ship loading is a twenty-four hour continuous operation when in progress, and the job incumbent may be given duties such as shift supervisor, panel operator, and tunnel operator etc.

Minimum requirements

You will be a South African national with a matric, recognized trade certificate from a reputable trade testing institution, three to five years post trade test experience in a factory or mining environment, and a code EB driver’s license.
