Introduction
The Knowledge Management Unit of the South African Sugarcane Research Institute has a vacancy for a Publications Officer/Editor. The incumbent will co-ordinate the compilation and distribution of SASRI publications. This involves managing the process from identification of appropriate topics, to gathering suitable material, to preparing and editing a product for final print and providing creative direction for layout. In addition the incumbent provides an English language editing service for all SASRI publications.
Job description

The following are key performance areas of the job:

 Co-ordinating the publications output for SASRI, which entails identifying suitable material, eliciting, collecting, writing, editing and approving submissions for all SASRI publications.
 Conducting face-to-face interviews to gather suitable material for drafting of copy.
 Serving as technical and language editor for all SASRI publications.
 Contributing to the lay-out designs of presentations and publications by liaising with the designer.
 Managing an electronic database of publications, ensuring that indexes are updated with the latest technology outputs.
 Offering support to specialists from varied fields in regards to appropriate content and writing style according to the target publication.
 Assisting with the co-ordination of all training material for the in-house certificate courses.
 Liaising extensively with internal and external contributors to ensure relevance of submissions.
 Managing SASRI’s online presence by identifying suitable content and creating posts for social media platforms.

Minimum requirements

In order to meet the requirements of the position the incumbent should have:

 A degree preferably in science, journalism or media studies.
 A minimum of 2 years’ experience in composing and editing written material or journalism.
 Excellent language skills in English.
 Good computer skills and a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint. 
 Knowledge or experience in a Science/ Agricultural environment would be an advantage.
