Introduction
The South African Sugarcane Research Institute has a vacancy for an Extension Specialist – Small Scale Growers based in the Lowveld. This position will report to the Extension Manager Small Scale and Land Reform Growers. Extension is responsible for knowledge and technology transfer from the Institute to the growers on all aspects of sugarcane husbandry, and provides the valuable function of feedback from growers to researchers. The successful incumbent will have administrative support in their office and will join a team of other experienced Extension Specialists in facilitating technology transfer from SASRI to growers throughout the industry.
Job description

The primary objectives of this role are: 
• to develop and manage extension programmes effectively among the emerging growers with a view to improving productivity
• to encourage and facilitate the adoption of better management practices related to sugarcane farming in general, ensuring the sustainability of farmers and the industry as a whole
• to work with and assist other industry stakeholders and government in the delivery of extension services to emerging growers 

Minimum requirements

In order to meet these objectives, applicants should possess the following:
• a BSc(Agric.) degree, or equivalent 
• a sound working knowledge of crop husbandry, agricultural and environmental management practices
• experience in the provision of an Extension service 
• computer literacy, especially in MS Word and MS Excel
• isiZulu or SiSwati communication skills
• some exposure to sugarcane agriculture would be an advantage 
• knowledge of irrigation management will be an advantage
