Introduction
The South African Sugarcane Research Institute has vacancies within their NovaCane facility for one-year contracts for 3 Laboratory Technicians. Micropropagation, via the SASRI proprietary NovaCane® (tissue culture) technology, is conducted in the Novacane Facility. Superior sugarcane genotypes in the final stage of the Plant Breeding programme are produced using the Novacane® technology to ensure that sufficient planting material is available for bulking upon variety release. SASRI uses NovaCane® technology to provide cane growers with true-to-type, disease free planting material of all new varieties. The successful incumbents must be skilled in tissue culture micropropagation. These positions are based in Mount Edgecombe.
Job description

The following are the key performance areas of the job:
 
  • Performing plant tissue culture procedures using aseptic techniques
  • Preparing plant material for in vitro tissue cultures and performing routine micropropagation
  • Preparing, dispensing and autoclave media
  • Preparing stock solutions
  • Monitoring overall health and level of contamination of micropropagated plants
  • Ensuring safety and other regulatory standards compliance
  • Contributing to overall lab organization and tidiness
  • Cleaning and calibration of lab equipment
  • Cleaning labware, empty and wash tissue culture jars and utensils, autoclave waste
  • Other related duties as assigned

Minimum requirements

 
The successful candidates should have a:
 
  • A BSc in Biology, Botany or Microbiology 
  • Knowledge of tissue culture procedures and aseptic techniques or
  • Microbiology experience
