About SASA The South African Sugar Association (SASA) provides a diverse range of highly specialized services to the South African sugar industry and our activities are funded in the main by the sugarcane growers and sugar milling companies. SASA operates from approximately 45 sites in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng. These include Kwa-Shukela and South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) based in Mount Edgecombe, the Shukela Training Centre at Mount Edgecombe and Mtunzini, the Sugar Terminals at Maydon Wharf and at Maputo, currently 11 Cane Testing centres, seven SASRI research stations, 17 Pest & Disease / Biosecurity offices and the SASA Pretoria offices. Job description

The Sugar Markets and Logistics Division (SM&L) has a position available for a Civil maintenance Handyman within the Engineering Department. SM&L is a division of the South African Sugar Association and the successful incumbent will be based at the Sugar Terminal in Maydon Wharf, Durban which is a bulk and bagged sugar handling and exporting facility.
 
Reporting to the Electrical Foreman the incumbent will be responsible for building maintenance activities and general repair work. In addition the objectives would be as follows:
·      To conduct inspections of the status of buildings and surroundings and arranges materials for specific work.
·      To allocate and monitor the execution of instructions related to activities.
·      To apply instructions in relation to general civil or building maintenance activities, i.e. plumbing, tiling, painting, bricklaying, plastering, carpentry etc.
·      To apply instructions and ensure adherence to rules relating to housekeeping and safety.
·      To perform a range of duties during the course of ship loading on an adhoc basis including shift work.

Essential for this role:
·       A Matric Certificate;
·       Driver’s License
·       Certificate of Competency in specific modules related to building trade (carpentry, painting, plumbing, bricklaying);
·       Knowledge and experience working on plumbing, carpentry and painting tasks;
·       A minimum of two years’ experience in general building maintenance and/or construction.
 
Pay and benefits are determined by the National Bargaining Council for the Sugar Manufacturing and Refining Industry.
