Job description

The Cane Testing Service (CTS), a division of the South African Sugar Association (SASA), provides a specialist service to determine the quality of individual grower cane deliveries to the mill for cane payment purposes. This analytical chemistry service assesses the recoverable value content in cane delivered to the mill by growers, providing a neutral and objective basis on which to calculate recoverable value payment by miller to grower. 
 
We have an excellent permanent opportunity for someone with three years relevant experience in a similar environment that has included supervisory responsibilities. 
 
This position is based at the CTS laboratory at the Malelane sugar mill. Reporting to a Cane Testing Manager, the Laboratory Supervisor is accountable for the effective supervision of CTS employees and resources in order to ensure accurate determination of sucrose for payment purposes. A thorough knowledge of laboratory practice and procedures and an ability to interact with management at all levels.
 
You will be responsible for:
 
Supervising three shifts of /- 6 employees each
 
Ensuring adherence to official cane testing methods
 
Analyzing and reporting using a laboratory information management system
 
Providing technical advice and information on behalf of the Cane Testing Service to the miller and growers
 
Routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and calibration of laboratory instruments;
 
Adherence to health and safety standards
 
Administration, ranging from the recording of customer queries to employee time and attendance 
 
You will bring to the role:
 
A Bachelor of Science Degree/B Tech Degree in Analytical Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Quality Assurance;
 
A proven track record as an analyst and supervisor in a plant environment;
 
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
 
Proficiency in MS Office;
 
A valid driver's license;
